Description

This is my short first method book I use with my own learners roughly age 4 to 6. Download and print it for use at home within your family or with one learner. It’s a great value resource that can be used with a teacher or at home with a parent/carer – they don’t necessarily have to have much musical experience themselves to understand and use the majority of the book.

It guides them through learning a small repertoire of simple songs firstly written out just with letter names then later with the addition of properly notated durations – note lengths. Many tutor books shy away from repetition but I am not afraid to say there is repetition in here – it’s vitally important when introducing the note lengths to do it with something familiar – so I use some of the tunes they have already learnt. This makes for really effective learning in my experience. It’s just like when children learn to read – you teach them to read words they already know and understand – you don’t teach them how to read words that aren’t yet in their vocabulary.

Once learners have successfully worked through this book with the help of a teacher or parent/carer they will have a good knowledge of ‘keyboard geography’ – what notes are where on the piano keyboard, and the meaning of high and low and when a melody is going up or down. They will also be able to play with a good sense of rhythm and pulse and be developing their finger strength and dexterity.

There is a youtube video of all the pieces contained in the book here. Do make sure you and the learner listen to and internalise any tunes you aren’t familiar with before trying to play them.

There are a few sample pages from the book on our free resources page if you want to check them out first.

Happy playing!
