If you want something a little different to traditional all-round piano lessons and are hoping to quickly be able to play your pop favourites, maybe to accompany your singing, or a friend’s, and jam to a 12 bar blues and other common chord sequences this is the course for you.

This course is based entirely upon using chord symbols to play rather than reading music notation. It gives you all the skills to follow lead sheets, play in lots of common keys, and take your playing to the next level with chord inversions, added notes to make 7th chords etc. and interesting accompaniment patterns. There’s a bit of improvisation and exercises/scales to help you on the way too.

I don’t teach you a repertoire of pop songs within the course (copyright issues of course, and everyone would want to learn different things!) but I do give you all the tools you need to go ahead and choose whatever you want to learn and create your own great arrangements that are suitable for your level – that’s the great thing about learning in this way – you can play through a song in a very simple way, then later add something more to it – like new accompaniment patterns – or the melody that you have worked out by ear – or maybe you will transpose it into a different key.

The course consists of 8 lessons averaging around 20 minutes each, but you should allow at least half an hour to watch each video whilst sitting at the piano/keyboard (yes a keyboard is fine for this course too – though we do introduce using the sustain pedal so you may want to get yourself one if you don’t have one), as you will want to pause and try things out for yourself as you would during a normal lesson.

Once you have paid for the course you will be granted access to watch the lessons on YouTube at your leisure. It fits around your lifestyle. I’d suggest watching one per week or one per fortnight and spending 15 minutes a day practicing in between so you have mastered all the things covered before moving on to the next lesson.

To give you an idea of what you might be able to do really soon if you go ahead and purchase the course, below are just a few suggestions of songs to look up and play during the course with your new found skills. You might not necessarily play them in the original key in which they are recorded but if you search for a version using the chords you have studied so far, they will sound great nonetheless.

By the end of lesson 3 pupils could have a go at playing these sort of pieces though sometimes in a different key from the original:

  • Lewis Capaldi – Someone You Loved
  • 4 Non Blondes – What’s Up
  • Florence and the Machine – You Got the Love
  • Adele – Someone Like You
  • One Republic – Counting Stars
  • Elvis Presley – Burning Love
  • Eric Clapton – Wonderful Tonight
  • Carly Rae Jepson – Call Me Maybe
  • The Cure- Friday I’m in Love
  • Jason Mraz – I’m Yours
  • Train – Hey Soul Sister
  • Phil Collins – In the Air Tonight
  • Like A Prayer – Madonna
  • 12 Bar blues in the key of C and G.

A full booklet including all the resources needed to study from is provided as a downloadable PDF file upon completion of your order. We aim to grant video access within 2 working days.
